A small town girl from the Midwest, Debra's started her culinary career in Raleigh, North Carolina as an apprentice baker at Simple Pleasures, a restaurant owned by the family that started Southern Living Magazine. She was managing the bakery within 6 months and it was during her years there that she learned the meaning of southern hospitality which is to be gracious, treat your guests to the best you have to offer and to make them feel welcomed at all times. She then went to work at the James Beard award-winning bakery, Cravings, which specialized in wedding cakes and was an excellent place to learn how to comfort a nervous bride and, even more importantly, the nervous mother of the nervous bride.
Moving to Los Angeles, Debra joined Gai Klass Catering which was annually rated by Zagat as the best catering company in the city. She rose up the ranks and became Executive Chef providing 4 star restaurant quality experiences in the private homes. She managed teams of culinary and service staff with the focus always being on the needs of the guest.
After years of walking the high wire of the high end culinary world she took the leap into ownership of her own restaurant. For 7 years she was the owner/chef of Madame Matisse, a Zagat rated and highly successful restaurant in Silver Lake. Many happy brunches later, she had accomplished her goal of owning her own business and was ready to explore another challenge.
After 25 years of experience in the food world as well as extensive travel through Europe and Mexico, she is proud to bring her experience in hospitality to the amazing team that Claudio and Adria have built at barbrix.
